Chinese immigrants poured into the United Kingdom in the 1950s, after the government lowered entrance restrictions due to a labour shortage. Before that time, the Chinese were a very small minority in the country and commonly made their living by operating laundries. Chinatown in Manchester traces its beginnings only as far back as the 1970s. A few Chinese restaurants opened in the area, and being quite a novelty at that time, soon became very popular. Subsequently, the local Chinese community was bolstered by the success of the restaurants, and other shops and markets quickly sprouted up. Over time, the area took on its own identity and was clearly defined as Chinatown, a markedly different neighbourhood than the rest of Manchester.

Chinatowntoday has grown much farther beyond the boutique shops and restaurants of its inception. The community now supports its inhabitants with all of modern life's essentials including homes for the elderly and law offices. The neighbourhood has become a very popular tourist destination and hosts cultural festivals and events throughout the year. In fact, tourism has become one of Chinatown's most important industries.

A good variety of hotels lie in Chinatown's vicinity. It is relatively easy to reach one's accommodation when travelling from Manchester airport. The airport is located just southeast of M56. Tourists can reach Chinatown by travelling 17km northeast on M56.

Visiting Chinatown is a delightful experience for any tourist. It is the second largest Chinese community in the UK, and its vibrant, lively ambiance gives guests the feeling that they are visiting China itself. Apart from the interesting shops and scenery, Manchester's Chinatown is still renowned for its fabulous dining. The popularity of the local restaurants' savoury ethnic dishes is what gave birth to the community, and is responsible for its continuing success.

Whether guests want to lose themselves in the finest, most succulent Chinese cuisine, or immerse themselves into Chinese culture as a whole, Manchester is the perfect destination. Plentiful lodging choices and convenient, proximity to the airport make visiting Manchester's Chinatown an easy endeavour. Tourists can venture into the Far East without travelling half-way across the world.

Set on a beautiful secluded coral beach, The Grand Makadi Hotel, south of Hurghada in Egypt was the perfect luxury family get away. Finding an ideal family holiday is always difficult, but greeted by fantastic staff and an impeccable resort, it was easy to get into the holiday spirit, even with our notoriously hard to please 15 and 8 year old children in tow! Here’s my run down of the resort.

The Hotel

The hotel grounds were truly beautiful, with fantastic design and beautifully landscaped gardens and pools, I truly felt as if I’d entered a relaxation paradise. The staff were excellent, constantly maintaining the high standard of the resort and grounds ensuring the hotel’s 5 star standards were rigorously kept! The rooms also kept to this standard; spacious with a lovely bathroom and a wonderful view. Our choice of family room was perfect as it meant the kids could have their own space and with a satellite T.V so they could be kept amused while we got ready for the day or evenings activities. With all the mod cons you could want, a variety of shops and free Wi-Fi, it was easy to enjoy comfort and luxury in this beautiful location.

Activities

The activity program at the hotel was very well thought out providing fantastic entertainment for all ages. With a beautiful outdoor pool and a separate kids pool, our family of water lovers were well catered for. The highlight of course was the beach and inviting turquoise sea which provided excellent snorkelling. With 6 tennis courts, a football playground, water polo and beach volleyball all on offer sports enthusiasts are well catered to and we especially enjoyed playing some table tennis. The hotel provides a daily entertainment program including games, competitions and sports activities which is perfect if you just want to relax and put your holiday in the staffs expert hands. The hotel really impressed with family facilities; a kids club, playground and playroom, adventure climbing castle, mini disco and even films for children made sure our kids were entertained and we could all enjoy the great range of facilities the Grand Makadi Hotel has to offer. The hotel also provides a daily shuttle service to the Grand Mall in Hurghada which was free of charge and made a great day trip, allowing us to get some well needed retail therapy into our vacation.

Dining

The all inclusive dining options definitely made us feel well catered to! With buffet breakfast lunch and dinner as well as 3 a la carte restaurants, offering Italian, Caribbean and Lebanese cuisine, our taste buds were excited throughout the trip. The variety of food on offer would keep even the fussiest diners happy and the hotel also provides a fantastic kids lunch buffet, perfect for keeping our pickiest diners content.

The Grand Makadi Hotel really does provide the perfect all inclusive family experience and with so much to do for children and adults of all ages, I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Holidays to Spain are something that many British tourists look for every year. But these days more and more of us are choosing to look for all-inclusive holidays. It used to be the case that all-inclusive holidays were reserved for long haul destinations. However, more and more resorts in countries all over the world are offering this type of package for holidaymakers.

The reason an all-inclusive holiday is so popular now is because of the fact that it offers great value for money. Having all your food and drink paid for before you head off on your holiday is something that a lot of us are finding to be very beneficial. The cost of living in Spain has risen since the changeover to the Euro so it is not so easy to find cheap drink and food on your holiday. That is why a lot of us like to have an all-inclusive package in place. It means we don’t have to worry about having the money for meals out and drinks as well.

All inclusive holidays are great for those with children because we all know how often they like to eat and drink when they are away. And with many all-inclusive deals including free ice cream, they are perfect for families.

You can travel to all four countries in the United Kingdom and in each find some of the UK’s best weekend city breaks. Whether you are looking for history, culture, culinary adventure, nightlife or simply a break from the day-to-day routine, the UK’s urban centres offer something to everyone.

For those looking for a more sedate city break, York is a good bet. Suffused with history, visitors can walk the walled city surrounding York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Europe. The Theatre Royal and a whole host of second-hand book shops provide rich pickings for culture vultures, while shoppers can explore the boutiques of The Shambles, a medieval laneway.

In the south of England, London is an obvious draw for tourists, but just 40 minutes by train from the capital is Brighton, which is an arty, bohemian enclave of the UK, and has the added bonus of being by the sea. Travel into the heart of England and Oxford, home to one of the world’s most renowned universities, offers a weekend city break full of dreaming spires, punting on the river and, for those so inclined, a buzzing live music scene. Further north, the Yorkshire cities of Leeds and Sheffield have undergone a great deal of rejuvenation of the last few years and are vibrant, youthful locations in which to spend a couple of days.

Cardiff, the capital of Wales, offers those on a weekend break attractions old and new, from the ancient ramparts of the castle to the interactive displays of the Millennium Centre. The large covered market and Queen Street should keep shoppers occupied. Sports fans should time their visit to coincide with the national rugby team playing at the Millennium Dome – truly an electric atmosphere.

In Scotland, a city break in Edinburgh allows the visitor to explore the Reformation-era architecture of the old town and the environs of the castle. Book early to visit during August, when the famous comedy festival takes over the city. Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, is renowned for its eclectic, vibrant nightlife and boisterous sports events, while Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, is surrounded by fascinating historical military sites and provides easy access to the mysteries of Loch Ness.

Wherever you choose to spend a weekend city break in the UK, cheap hotels from Travelodge provide a comfortable, affordable way of getting the most from your stay.

So you’ve finally ended the annual family debate about vacation destination. Well done. Dubai was an excellent choice. This is the land of the desert safari, the Shawarma and the crystal white beach. Primarily, though, it’s a little island crowded with hotels and spas so it’s a locale to snuggle into luxuriously, champagne—and liquor license—in hand, and learn how to exist opulently. There are hundreds of hotels cluttered onto this little leg of land so selection is complicated to say the least. There is one bright star shining among the throngs, though. Here are the top 5 reasons to visit Le Royal Meridian in Dubai.

First Priority: Baby Sitter

If you’re going to nestle into Dubai’s sumptuousness, you’re probably going to want to escape from the parent role occasionally. The Kids’ Club has a team of professionals to supervise daily excitement. Kids will participate in a packed schedule of joyful commotion that includes age-friendly sports, indoor air conditioned club activities to escape sweltering days, banana boat rides and playground fun. Teens have access to beaches, three temperature perfect pools and sports.

Second Priority: Relax

Drop off the scraggly bits of work stress clinging to your psyche by visiting the hotel’s Carcalla Spa. Davidesque statues populate aqua Hammam pool surrounds and marble columns are draped with ivy. Its team of therapists dominates a menu including massage, Elemis facials and beauty treatments. Amenities scattered on the premises include an advanced gym, aerobic centre and saunas for sweating those worries away. In between, hobble along to the tea lounge.

Third Priority: Romance and Haute Cuisine

Being a five star hotel, it’s heavily colonized by a variety of bars and restaurants. There are 14 in total, allowing guests to eat to a different cultural tune every night of the week. For a Middle Eastern experience, expect vivid flavours rich with turmeric, garlic and cumin. Hummus, kofta and falafels are delicacies, well finished with a sweet baklawa which replaces the typical Greek honey with rose water. Also on offer are seafood, Thai, Malaysian, Mexican, and Italian cuisines. Breakfast is served as a buffet opening out onto the gardens.

Fourth Priority: Nightlife and Day Adventure

Perhaps the best of the top 5 reasons to visit Le Royal Meridian in Dubai is its location. The pools create a watery path to tropical gardens guiding the way to the beach. Here you can try out some water sports, but most who visit Dubai are ripe for the shopping experience. Guests are shuttled off to the legendary Ibd Battuta which is the most titanic themed mall in the world. Packed with almost 300 retailers and 21 cinemas, it’s a reverie for kids. For more tranquil days, butlers serve every refreshment need at the poolside. For a sprinkling of evening culture, take a saunter down to the theatre close by.

Fifth Priority: Sleep

Rooms are of ultimate lavishness. Every one of them has a sea view and balcony and guests are greeted in star style with a bottle of bubbly and canapes. There are LCD televisions, DVD and CD players, coffee and tea makers, and, if you must, high speed wireless. At the end of the day, you will lay down your head feeling as if you’ve been drowned in pampering.

For those laid-back getaways with all the sun, sea and sand you could hope for, not to mention lashings of relaxation to boot, holidays in Menorca could be just what you’re looking for.

Cast out into the Mediterranean Sea, Menorca forms part of the ever-popular collection of Balearic Islands situated just off the Eastern coast of Spain. Hailed as a haven of relaxation for holidaymakers looking for a more tranquil experience than that of neighbouring Majorca or Ibiza, Menorca is all about taking it easy.

Like most Spain package holidays, Menorca is all about sun, sea and sand. It’s got more beaches than the entire chain of Balearic Islands put together and beautiful scenery to boot – from craggy cliffs and pretty little coves to rugged countryside, shady olive groves and quaint traditional villages.

If you’re taking the whole family, you can rest assured that everyone will be well-catered for here. From tots and toddlers to grandparents, Menorca has got something for everyone in a lovely unhurried environment. Keep the youngsters entertained in a suitably located family hotel, where you’ve got great child-friendly beaches and the popular water park, or keep the teenagers happy with the range of water sports on offer.

Or if you’re looking to entertain the older generation, why not try the pine-flanked bay of Cala Galdana? With its wide sweeping bay, tranquil waters and beautiful rocky cliff tops, perfect for a leisurely walk to take in some seriously stunning views, this has got to be the best spot in the Mediterranean. By day, sit under the shade of the many pines as you enjoy a good read, and by night tuck into some hearty fare and sample traditional Spanish cuisine at its best.

Menorca holidays were made for taking it easy and one thing’s for sure, if rest and relaxation are on the agenda, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

The perfect holiday starts with good planning, and if you have been thinking about the Greek Isles there are a few things you should consider before you board your plane. Do some research to find out which islands are best suited for your holidays. Corfu is popular with tourists, but the history is amazing. Kefalonia is home to Greek artists, sculptors and musicians which add to its artistic charm. Of course if you want to walk your way around Greece like I did, take a holiday on Paxos.

The tiny island is a mere eight kilometres long and just three kilometres wide. You can literally walk from end to end. The magical island is only three hours from Corfu by sea. There are over 40 pebbled beaches that frame the azure blue ocean. Before you spend your entire trip walking, you may want to take a boat along the east coast so you can explore the caves.

The capital village of the island of Paxos is Gaios. Before you head out on your trek, stop for a bite at a restaurant or taverna, and be sure and shop for goodies to take back home as there are some wonderful little shops in the coastal village.

The dense olive groves are a sight to see, and make for interesting walks. None of the ancient trees are sprayed which results in families all over the island producing award winning olive oils. I arrived in late March, and was amazed at the beauty of the flora and fauna.

There are literally hundreds of walking tracks and paths that criss-cross the island. When I got into town, I bought a map which was very helpful. I wasn’t really worried about getting lost. The island is so small, that I knew if I lost my way, I would eventually run into someone. Also make sure that you bring plenty of water, as it can get quite warm during the summer.

I stayed in a villa and was able to walk to the beach, restaurants, shops or tavernas, as the majority of properties are about 25 minutes away. On the way, I was in awe of the green grass, wild flowers and olive groves that grow alongside the well-worn walking paths. I adored strolling along the lanes of abandoned villages that are lined with stone walls. Do not forget your camera, because you are going to want to get pictures of the old Venetian houses which were ruined by the windmills and olive presses back in the day. My favourite walk took me from Loggos to a 17th century church. I climbed the bell tower and was in awe of the spectacular views to Corfu. Other sights that you must not miss on a walk include the Tripitos Arch, simply stunning, and the migrating birds that flock to the island in the early spring.
